Eggbert the Slightly Cracked Egg
Published in School & Library Binding by Putnam Pub Group Juv (March, 1994)
Authors: Tom Ross and Rex Barron
Average review score:

Eggbert is great!
I read this book to kids who visited my school library each spring for years. I enjoyed it enough to order for my grandchildren. The message that "being a little different is just fine" is wonderful. The illustrations are well done and I think it works for Easter. A good picture book!

Eggbert The slightly cracked egg...
The kids can't get enough of this book. The illustrations leap off the page, they are colorful and realistic. Story applies to all in teaching about differences and what people can do when on the other side of the fence. A true delight of a story!

An amazing book teaching everyone the pride in diversity.
This book is absolutely wonderful. It talks about the slightly cracked egg trying to find his niche and his identity. As he journeys place to place he discovers the uniqueness of being different. The illustrations are excellent, vividly depicting the story. A reader can easily see the sincerity of the author throughout the book. I was a tutor when I first discovered the book at the library. I immediately knew it was something special. Not only does it teach kids but it teaches adults.

Horses and Ponies (Barron's Pocket Gem)
Published in Hardcover by Barrons Juveniles (April, 1996)
Authors: Sandy Ransford, Charlotte Hard, and Charlie Webster
Average review score:

For all horse lovers!
This was a great book. It tells about participating in horse shows and taking care of your own horse and much more! Anyone who loves horses should read this.

As informative as it is fascinating
Sandy Ransford's Kingfisher Riding Club Horses & Ponies is a superbly illustrated introduction for young readers to horses and ponies which is as informative as it is fascinating. Youngsters new to the animals are shown all aspects on approaching, caring for, exercises, breeding, and riding the equine companions. For more experienced young riders there is a wealth of practical and insightful information on pony shows, dressage and eventing. For those who own or have access to a horse or pony (and for those who dream of having their own mount one day), then Kingfisher Riding Club Horses & Ponies is very essential and highly entertaining reading.

What a neat little book!
I love this little book. It's got tons of pictures and a cute little drawing in the top right corner of every page. It covers breeds such as the Shire, Suffolk Punch, Cleveland Bay, Holsteiner, Arabian, Appaloosa, Dartmoor, and Falabella. I highly recomend this colorful easy to read book to all children who love horses. This book includes an index of breeds and a height chart. The pictures are really nice as well.

The Jack Russell Terrier Handbook (Barron's Pet Handbooks)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (August, 2000)
Author: D. Caroline Coile
Average review score:

Advanced breed-specific information
The Jack Russell Terrier Handbook is like no other book available for the breed. The emphasis is on providing the most in-depth and up-to-date informaton about subjects vital to caring for and living with a JRT, including behavior problems and training, medicine and hereditary health problems, nutrition, genetics, and breeding. Information on fun stuff to do with your terrier, such as training for earthdog competitions or even going hunting, is also included, as are tamer diversions such as agility, racing, and conformation. This is not a book of pedigrees and show-win photos, but a book for people who enjoy the JRT in every facet of its being. Intersperced in the text are lots of color photos of JRTs in action, and tidbits of technical information (Terrier Tech) and facts (Jack Fact). A book for people who want to excel at JRT ownership.

The Jack Russell Terrier Handbook
Great book!
I have read quite a few Jack Russell books and this is very informative and very well written I would recommend this book highly, especially to someone interested in Jack Russells it explains a lot about the breed, showing, feeding, training and just understanding these special dogs. It's a must read!

the jack russell terrier handbook
Very good book. informative. I bought a Jack and the book at the same time and the book saved me a lot of headaches. A must have for the jack russell owner, or anyone thinking about getting a Jack. Thanks

The Joy of Cheesecake (Barron's "Joy Of" Cookbooks)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (September, 1989)
Authors: Dana Bovbjerg and Jeremy Iggers
Average review score:

One of the Best Cheesecake Books Ever!
I have baked cheesecakes for over 30 years, and regard this book as the best. I haven't found a bad recipe in it yet, just good, really good and oh my! I love the way you can mix and match different crusts and toppings. I like the information in the beginning of the book, and I can't live without at least one piece a year of the "Is it Cheesecake or Is it Fudge?" cake!!

Not for the faint of heart...
My great-uncle gave me his old hardcover version of this cookbook and after making just 2 cheesecakes with it (the no-bake daiquiri and the orange-brandy), it replaced "The Joy of Cooking" as my primary dessert cookbook.

The book is extremely helpful in it's layout. Rather than include a crust recipe along with every cheesecake recipe in the book, this cookbook lists one recommended crust recipe and the page it can be found on with each cheesecake recipe, but you can also mix and match to suit your tastes (I personally preferred an Oreo-crumb crust to the vanilla-wafer crust the book suggested for its dark chocolate cheesecake). There are also sections for toppings and glazes, and there is also a section on no-bake cheesecakes, and even a few recipes for cakes that aren't "real" cheesecakes, but contain cream cheese nonetheless.

Most of the recipes in this cookbook are more complicated than the 3-step cheesecake recipes you find on the back of cream cheese boxes in the supermarket, but the difference in quality is unbelievable. I made the pumpkin cheesecake for an office Thanksgiving party, and it was such a hit that 3 co-workers paid me $25 apiece to make one for each of them for the holidays!

There is a type of cheesecake in this book for every taste out there, from apple to chocolate to walnut. The only thing missing is recipes for savory cheesecakes, which I've seen in some food catalogs, but that's such a minor quip it doesn't dectract from the usefulness of this book. All in all, if you have ever tried cheesecake and loved it or even remotely liked it, you'll find something in this cookbook to satisfy you.

The best "cheesecake" how-to book
I've owned this book for nearly 20 years and it's become ragged from all of the use it's gotten over the years. If you think cheesecake is tricky or hard to make, read this book. I've learned all of the tricks to making beautiful and delicious cheesecakes of many varieties. Every holiday I'm asked to contribute dessert to the dinner - - of course, they're asking for cheesecake. Try it - - it couldn't be easier.

Keys to Parenting Your Two-Year-Old (Barron's Parenting Keys)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (March, 1993)
Author: Meg Zweiback
Average review score:

Great, great book!
Parents, this book is wonderful! If you have a 2 year old child that will not seem to listen and you have tried everything then you need this book. It explains why screaming, yelling and spanking do not work on some children. This book explains why your 2 year old acts like he or she does and how to deal with your 2 year old when they misbehave. I have read several books on this subject and this one I definitely like the best. It is small and easy to read. Good luck!

short and complete
I recommend this book to all of my friends because it is very thorough and very short! This is especially helpful if the other parent isn't much of a reader (at least about child development) I highlight a few chapeters when I want my husband to understand more about what our daughter is going through.

this is a really great book
I have read a lot of books on child development/parenting/etc but this short book is one of the best. Everything is there that is in the longer books (and more) but as a busy parent I actually have time to read it. Even better, I can give it to my husband to read ( a chapter or two) and he'll do it! I've also read the toilet training book by this author and it is much much better than anything else--no formulas, just good common sense.

essential chem guide
I have used this review book since its first edition both for h.s. chem. and as a review in my AP chem classes. I don't think there is a more thorough or clearly written review book than this one on the market. For students preparing for the SAT II in chem, the book needs be supplemented with additional questions of the type used on that exam.

Microbiology (Cliffs Quick Review)
Published in Paperback by Cliffs Notes (August, 1996)
Author: I. Edward Alcamo
Average review score:

thank you
thank you for the fast delivery of the book.

Great reference
This book made medical microbiology much easier. I used this book for my medical microbiology class. It is easier to understand and it cut my study time because it was to the point. I also used the following:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (ISBN:0971999635)
The second book helped me prepare for the kind of questions on my medical microbiology tests. In fact, both these books helped me to get a 93 average in my medical microbiology class. I was recommended these two books from a friend of mine in another med school. He also got high grades on his medical microbiology exams.

When you're taught by Dr. alcamo, you stay taught.
I was a student of the author 20 years ago and his clear, concise teaching method comes across in this text. If you can believe it, after all this time,"Micro" is still one of my favorite subjects.

Nina: Adolescence
Published in Audio Cassette by Listen & Live Audio (16 May, 2003)
Authors: Amy Hassinger and Mia Barron
Average review score:

you have to listen to his audiobook- ITS GREAT!
I could not stop listening to this book! any audio book fan would enjoy this production. Mia Barron (the narrator)does an excellent job--especially with the interaction between the two teenage girls- Nina & her friend Riassa. It will remind you of your teenage years!
Great author, great story, even better on tape!
(aren't they always though!)

An exceptional novel.
This novel deals beautifully with a fascinating and challenging subject - the female teenage years. At times the writing in 'Nina: Adolescence' transports me into Nina's very thoughts and circumstances. Amazing. The writing has a wonderful pace and lightness of touch. Don't miss out.

an absolute MUST read!!!!
Adolescence is hard enough--without your mother documenting every physical change you undergo, let alone naming you the nude subject of her art. This is just what Nina, the protagonist of Amy Hassinger's novel, Nina:Adolescence, must endure after her four-year-old brother, Dylan, suddenly drowns one afternoon in the pond behind their suburban-Boston home. Depressed and lonely after her son's death, Nina's mother finds refuge in her art, painting nude portraits of Nina and devoting her entire self to capturing the changes in her daughter: the rounding thighs, budding breasts, curving hip bones. Meanwhile, Nina is becoming more aware of her own sexuality, abetted by a cast of characters including Raissa, a friend from dance class, and her mother's old friend, Leo, an art critic with dubious intentions. A dancer, both conscious of her body and uncomfortable with her burgeoning sexuality, Nina must publicly deal with these changes as her mother wins praise for her haunting portraits.

In careful, exact prose, Amy Hassinger eloquently captures the delicacy of adolescence pulls off a compelling coming of age novel. What distinguishes this work is the humanity with which Hassinger writes--the way she understands and nurtures her characters. Instead of exploiting Dylan's death as a less polished writer might, Hassinger organically evokes the memory of his drowning as it was: quick, sudden, and still confusing after four years; his memory haunts the family like the portraits do all those who look upon them. This is an excellent book by an author whose voice I would follow anywhere.

Nina is a true piece of literary fiction that explores the themes of growing up, love, and family that are relevant to us all. I am an avid reader and this is one of the best books I have read in a LONG time. Do yourself a favor and buy this book TODAY!

The Outsiders (Cliffs Notes)

Comparison to my own life
I got the idea to read S.E. Hinton's "The Outsiders" from by best friend. We saw the movie together and she got me the book for my birthday. Now I've read it twice already!! It's my favorite book!! Reading this book made me compare it to my own life and I concluded that my life and the lives of "The Outsiders" are somewhat the same. Discrimination from other classes . We are the kids that get made fun of 'cause of how we talk and what we wear. But we try not let this bother us and get along with each other. It's us, "ghetto kids" (sometimes we get called that, and like were "thugin'" from the hood), and the other ones, the rich kids that shop and A&E and AF, the preppy kids, they're the ones that call us that stuff. But all in all, "The Outsiders" is my most favoriet book in the entire world, I love it!!

THE OUTSIDES is on the INSIDE of my mind..
I had to read the Outsiders by S.E. Hinton for school and another one of her books. I am currently reading That was then, this is now and its a really good book. The outsides is a really good perspective on life from an outsiders point of view on things.. I like in the "hood" and we are called hoodlums and we have to watch out for people like the "soc" or what we call, preppies.. S.E. Hinton just does a good job telling the point of view form a outisder and i rate this book on a scale from 1 to 5 a 6...

Great Cliffsnotes!!
WOW!! This was totally helpful! I had to read "The Outsiders" for school and these cliffsnotes helped me so much! They helped me to understand the book and to really grasp the concept of it. I would definitely recommend this for anyone reading "The Outsiders"!!

Painless Writing (Barron's Painless Series)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (September, 2001)
Authors: Jeffrey Strausser and Denise Gilgannon
Average review score:

This wonderful book helped me to get into college!
This fabulous book gave me tons of great tips on how to write an excellent essay. I bought this book to help find tune my college essay and was amazed at the results. My dull, explanatory essay was transformed into an exciting masterpiece that helped me get into an Ivy League school. With helpful examples and complete web addresses, "Writing Painlessly" enabled me to write a concise, grammatically correct, and connected piece. The web sites were informative and added complementary knowledge to what this book provided for me. After I showed this book to my enlgish teacher, she loved it so much that she is considering using it as a supplement for our class. If you have ever dreaded writing a school paper before, this book is for you. With fun exercises and great illustrations, this book is informative and educational. I strongly recommend that you buy this book to help with your papers, essays, and even poetry. Covering the basics, yet expanding to encompass the fine arts of more advanced language, "Writing Painlessly" can be used at almost all english levels.

Where was this book when I went to school?
Teaching English writing classes suddenly got a whole lot easier. This masterful piece makes writing well seem simple. What a fabulous tool for students!! All of my classes will be using this book in the future (and loving it).

Give "Painless Writing" an A+
Give an A+ and 5 stars to Jeffrey Strausser's "Painless Writing." Although the "Painless" series books are geared toward middle school students, I highly recommend this book to any one of any age.

On my high school graduation day over twenty years ago, I stepped off the platform with a diploma in my hand and a gold cord of excellence around my neck for winning the English award. I sailed with ease through my college composition courses and I annually compose about a thousand messages and memos to perform my job. Therefore, I thought there was nothing that I could learn about writing from a simple, entertaining book like "Painless Writing." I was wrong.

I was excited to discover that some of the topics and techniques covered in "Painless Writing" were new to me. For instance, I had never encountered the term "nominalizations" before. If that term is new to you, too, don't worry; you'll find out how to use them properly. Also, I was surprised to learn that the term "expletive construction" did not pertain to words best left out of fine, cultured writing, but rather, it refers to sentences beginning with the words "there are," "it is," etc.

"Painless Writing" simply explains each new topic and then provides exercises with answers to allow you to practice the new skills and techniques being covered. These exercises are not dull and boring like those we suffered with in our grammar books once-upon-a-time ago; they are entertaining and delightful.

Sample examples show both "poor" and "better" writing. I thought this method of teaching was extremely helpful.

The test answers are written out completely and then explained by the author. So, if you choose a wrong answer, you can see why the other answer was correct. This extra effort on the author's part is invaluable.

Another feature that I liked was the page numbering. "Say, what?" you say. Yes, I loved the page numbering. Each page number is written large enough for even forty-year old eyes to read and highlighted in a pink circle making it easy to see (this is great for flipping to the answer section).

I have already begun to incorporate some techniques that I learned from this book into both my private and professional writing.

Good job, Jeffrey Strausser.

The contents cover the following topics: Preposition clutter, enlivening writing, silencing the passive voice, reducing nominalizations/activating your writing, smoothing out your writing, using commas (not a boring chapter! you'll like it), adding rhythm to your writing, ten common writing errors (several of which I needed review), and for those still in school-a real bonus-a template for writing a term paper.
End of comments.
